Die Decke hat ein Loch [ The Hole in the Blanket] is an exhibition and research project by the artists annette hollywood, Jana Müller and Moira Zoitl, in collaboration with the Kunstverein am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz Berlin/Susanne Prinz, in which (auto)biographical narratives are used to examine material, contemporary and cultural histories that lie outside of mainstream society. The working methods of the participating artists overlap in questioning archival inventories using different research and artistic-scientific methods. In artistic works, traces of archive materials are linked, reworked and made visible to form new narratives. Artefacts, documents and other narratives from institutional archives are consciously intertwined with knowledge and objects from the private sphere. The constructed, porous and temporary state of the nature of archives is addressed, a condition that distorts or completely omits the perspective of many realities of life. In accordance with the children’s clapping game that gives the title, and which continues to rhyme with “... da sah ich sie dann doch.” […I then saw her after all.], the exhibition project follows the idea that only by looking once again through the holes and fractures of historical archives, a more accurate and diverse picture of society emerges.

The exhibition is supported by: Senatsverwaltung für Kultur und Europa des Landes Berlin.

Findings

Exhibition Project: Björn Drenkwitz, Pia Linz, Jana Müller, Jan Schmidt

Exhibition View: Deutscher Künstlerbund e.V., Markgrafenstraße 67, 10969 Berlin

The cognitive process of finding is an elementary component of all art production. »Findungen / Findings« brings together four artists who pass through this cognitive process in very different ways and who now relate their findings to each other in the exhibition space. Taken out of the context of individual oeuvres in this way, entering into dialogue with one another, the artworks join together to create new and surprising narratives.
In her Traces of Truth, Jana Müller playfully manipulates the viewer’s associations, laying down imaginary trails that call for a process of tracking down. Her installations can be read as records of mysterious events. Her formal idiom recalls forensic procedures, theatre sets, and the aesthetics of cinema. In the current Trace, on show at Deutscher Künstlerbund, the artist follows in the footsteps of her father who worked as a criminologist in East Germany.
Jan Schmidt’s work centres on processual explorations of material. Both the Halfpipe Drawing and the thin, planed down wooden objects included in this exhibition are the results of intense, protracted material studies in which time played a key role: the abstract drawing, for example, was made by dropping a pencil onto a curved sheet of paper several thousand times. This rule-based creative process may appear strict, but the result is rich in poetic associations.
Time is also a crucial factor in Pia Linz’s artistic process. Her focus is not on material, however, but on specific places and spaces. Based on precise observation, she translates them directly into drawings that interweave plan-like analysis and subjective annotation, outer and inner world. The drawing in the show, Parlamentsviertel (Parliament District), which is part of the art collection of Germany’s parliament, the Bundestag, invites viewers to immerse themselves in its wealth of observations and compare them with their own.
The encounter between Pia Linz’s Parlamentsviertel and Björn Drenkwitz’s Protest gives rise to possible narratives on democracy, public space and political uprising. The cobblestones lying on the floor are engraved with slogans from political demonstrations, making each one both a storage medium and a potential projectile. Engraving and storage also play a part in Drenkwitz’s second work in the show, The Rest Is Silence. A line recalling an audio spectrum is engraved on four baseball bats, the result of a physical process: while reciting Hamlet’s final words, an actor drew the line manifested by the natural movement of his hand while speaking.

The exhibition was initiated by the four artists, all members of the Deutscher Künstlerbund, and jointly conceived for the Berlin exhibition space.

DRINNEN ROSA DRAUSSEN PINK

Exhibition and Newspaper Project – College of Fine Arts Berlin: Prof. Monica Bonvicini, Heike Kabisch, Jana Müller and Nilam Ali, Reem Awad, Kim Bode, Lena Braatz, Billie Clarken, Miriam Döring, Louisa Frauenheim, Jolyon Jones, Renata Kaminska, Luisa Menschick, Johanna Michel, Lea Mugnaini, Shin Oh Nam, Viktor Petrov, Sonnhild Schietzel, Marco Siciliano

DRINNEN ROSA UND DRAUSSEN PINK
is a project that explores public space and its history against the backdrop of an ongoing pandemic that restricts its use, while at the same time re-examining our perception of public and private spheres. It is an experiment, a mutating process of digging, combing and searching for a shape.
Due to the current situation, the project went through different forms and demanded a high degree of flexibility from its participants. Just when an image of the work to present had emerged in the classical sense, it was disgarded again. From the 16 April to the 18 April 2021, we planned to meet on the public green between Almstadt- and Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße in Berlin with spades, shovels, hoes and other tools to make our process visible and to set new processes in motion. Using this green space as an example, we wanted to move, shift, build up, dismantle, add to and question matter. What information has been deposited over time and how can we read it? What do they communicate to us? What can we add anew?
Unfortunately, this action was made impossible by another lockdown and no longer corresponded to the plan we intended to accomplish due to the imposed Corona rules. But nevertheless, everyone involved dug deeper and deeper into the square. The research and the communication between each other, the square and the shifts inside and outside came to the fore and became the central figure of a collective idea. The various traces are visible here in the publication and can be read as documents of an unreal time. What remains is a constant overwriting of things, an experiment, nothing is fixed and in its place.

The idea of a collaboration with the class of Prof. Monica Bonvicini arose through our participation in the Mentoring-Programm für hochqualifizierte Künstlerinnen und Wissenschaftlerinnen at the Universität der Künste Berlin. Curator Susanne Prinz generously offered to make the premises at the Verein zur Förderung von Kunst und Kultur am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz Berlin available to us for this project.

Leaving Europe

Exhibition Project:
Felicitas Hoppe, Jana Müller, Alexej Meschtschanow curated by Stephan Klee

Location: Haus am Lützowplatz / IG Metall Ausstellungsraum, Berlin
www.hal-berlin.de, www.frontviews.de

In the year 1935, at the beginning of the Great Terror in the USSR and in the midst of the Great Depression in the US, the writers Ilja Ilf and Jewgeni Petrow travelled in a silver Ford through the vastness of America. They were guided by the brave, immigrant Engineer Solomon Trone from the East Coast to the West Coast and back to the East Coast, all commissioned by the Soviet State Organ PRAWDA. What almost looked like a classical road-trip was in fact a tour with a secret mission and higher purpose. The two Russians concluded their humorous and partially bizarre experiences in the land of the class enemy in their famous travel-diary-novel “Little Golden America” with photographs and texts. Exactly 80 years later the artists Jana Müller, Alexej Meschtschanow and the author Felicitas Hoppe follow the near exact route of the literary duo, supported by the skilful guidance of professor Ulrike Rainer, also an immigrant. From 2015 until 2018 a renewed, literal, but this time also artistic, survey of the Great Brother America has been developed. The work is produced from impressions collected during their travels as a complete multimediabased project, encompassing text, image, object, sound, installation and an online archive. In doing so everything is based in personal experience and the formal language of the travellers. This project is the “Grand Tour – Leaving Europe”. In addition two books are released about the new road- trip: Felicitas Hoppe’s novel “PRAWDA. Eine amerikanische Reise”, published by S. Fischer Verlag, 2018 and the art book “THE MAKING OF PRAWDA“ by Felicitas Hoppe, Alexej Meschtschanow, Jana Müller and Ulrike Rainer and published by Distanz Verlag, 2019. The final, whole work “Grand Tour – Leaving Europe” as well as the books are on view from the end of March until mid April 2019 at the exhibition space of IG Metall in Berlin. Initiator: Felicitas Hoppe
Date: 06. September – 15. Oktober 2015
Websitearchiv – www.3668Ilfpetrow.com

The Grand Tour restages a journey from the book “One-storied America” (translated as “Little Golden America”) by Ilja Ilf and Jewgeni Petrov, a writer duo commissioned by the newspaper Prawda to travel across the US for four months in 1935, at the peak of Stalin’s Great Terror and the Great Depression.  Retracing the two Russians’ steps, Felicitas Hoppe, Alexej Meschtschanow, Jana Müller and Ulrike Rainer spent over five weeks on the road and traversed more than 10,000 miles in a modern Ford Explorer from East to West and then back again, reading, listening, photographing and writing. They were simultaneously creating an archive consisting of images, texts and sounds, available at www.3668Ilfpetrow.com. The travelers aimed each in their own way to create interplays of the past, the present and the future.

The painting “Campo di Rialto” (1758-63) by Canaletto, commissioned by the Berlin-born merchant, patron and art collector Sigismund Streit and now on view at the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, serves as a reference point and a visual backdrop of the exhibition “Cumuli – Trading Places”. It is a painted record of this place a by-gone time. Today, the square’s architecture looks virtually the same, an apparently static spatio-temporal configuration. Yet, what does this painterly document disclose? What does the picture tell us about art, Venice, commerce and collecting?

Reproductions of the painting function as the centerpiece and backdrop of the exhibition. Visitors can move through the spatial installation as if in a life-size toy theater. This spatialized dimension of the picture accommodates individual works by the invited artists. These works provide a commentary on the painting, its copies and the associations they conjure, thus prompting new interpretations of the painted document and a multitude of narrative overlaps.

The exhibition will also tour to Venice. The re-importation of the Canaletto painting, supplemented by the artists’ multi-faceted readings, will stage a direct confrontation between document and reality. A catalogue has been published with texts by Susanne Prinz, Vanja Sisek, Julia Wirxel and the artists.

The exhibition Cumuli an attempt to show various possibilities in the use of previously accumulated things by artists. Since no small number of artists generate their works from the image-worlds of everyday life, from trivial media such as television, magazines or series of postcards, but also from historical archives or family documents, artworks which operate with the temporal or cultural transfer of things are inevitably a focus of the presentation. With them it becomes clear how an altered approach or incorporation into different social and ritual practices, epistemological contexts or value systems changes the relationship between the things use and people, and between things and other things.
Interesting here are the (new) historical, scientific, social or religious as well as aesthetic implications of things, within a number of works shown in the exhibition. […]The fact that artists aren’t only interested in souvenirs and the personal but sometimes collect oddities for the sole reason that no one else can warm to them can be seen in another group of works. […] The third aspect of artistic collection examined in Cumuli seems more convention: art collecting itself. There is the establishment of a collection through exchanging works with other artists; and then the purchase of a work of art as a source of inspiration for one’s own work, or as an expression of admiration for the work of a colleague. […]
The exhibition is intended to bring the ambivalent relationship between thing and artwork implied by every kind of artistic collecting into view. Therefore a form of display has been developed that unites archive, storeroom and presentation surface. The things can change their location during the exhibition period, being placed in the limelight for a short time, before or after their visible storage.

The project in several aspects deals with archiving as an artistic method. During the four weeks of our stay at halka art project we will create a growing exhibition using strategies of overlapping, reorganizing and layering corresponding with the organism of the city of Istanbul. The working process is based on analyses of the social, cultural, spatial and esthetic dimensions of the city, including artist talks, screenings and field trips. The program and the growing exhibition involving local and foreign artists will be open to the public. The project phase in Istanbul creates a platform for discussion and intercultural exchange extending a transnational artist network.

Francisco de Goya’s print series “The Disasters of War” served as a point of departure for Alexej Meschtschanow and Jana Müller’s exhibition project “The Disasters of Peace” in 2010. It revolved around the following question: What qualifies a society as peaceful, considering that a day-to-day look at the news confronts one with ever new facts and images of gruesomeness in ever new conflict zones? Taking its cue from Goya’s print series, the exhibition brought together contemporary forms of the spectacular in an installation containing works by 16 invited artists at the Umspannwerk in Berlin-Tiergarten. A catalogue with an essay by Peter Lang was released at the finissage.
